Η χαρτογράφηση της παρουσίας του Φραγκίσκου της Ασίζης στο έργο και τη σκέψη του Νίκου Καζαντζάκη αποκαλύπτει πως οι δεσμοί που συνέδεαν τον κρητικό στοχαστή με τον δυτικό άγιο υπερέβαιναν τη συμβατικότητα της σχέσης μεταξύ βιογράφου και βιογραφούμενου. Το πρόσωπο ή, μάλλον, ο μύθος του Φραγκίσκου στάθηκε για τον Καζαντζάκη όχι μόνο η πιο ελκυστική εκδοχή του Χριστιανισμού αλλά και ένας πολύτιμος συνοδοιπόρος, που δεν έπαυσε να τροφοδοτεί τους σταθμούς ή/και τις τροπές της πνευματικής του διαδρομής. Η παρούσα μελέτη φιλοδοξεί να τεκμηριώσει και να αναδείξει τις φραγκισκανικές πτυχές της καζαντζακικής συνείδησης. Η σπουδή αυτών των πτυχών επιτρέπει, αφενός, την κριτική προσέγγιση των αιτημάτων του ηρωισμού και της αγιότητας, τα οποία συνθέτουν το ανθρωπολογικό ιδεώδες και επενδύουν δυναμικά τις κοινωνικές ιδέες ή/και τα πολιτικά οράματα του Καζαντζάκη. Aφετέρου, η σπουδή αυτών των πτυχών ευνοεί τους όρους ενός ανανεωμένου διαλόγου ανάμεσα στις σταθερές της χριστιανικής πίστης και στα δομικά υλικά του μεταφυσικού σύμπαντος του κρητικού στοχαστή.
