Η ανάλυση των "Κρητών" αναπόφευκτα θα εστιάσει σε δύο σημεία των σωζόμενων αποσπασμάτων, για τα οποία μπορούμε να έχουμε μια ολοκληρωμένη εικόνα και άποψη, και από τα οποία, σε συνδυασμό με τα σωζόμενα έργα, μπορεί να προκύψουν πολύτιμες πληροφορίες για τη θέση που κατέχουν οι Κρήτες στο έργο του μεγάλου τραγικού, καθώς και για τη σκέψη του Ευριπίδη. Αυτά είναι α) η Πάροδος των μυστών του Ιδαίου Διός (απ. Ι), και β) ο μονόλογος της Πασιφάης (απ. III, στ. 4-41). Για όλα τα υπόλοιπα fragmenta μόνον υποθετικά και αβέβαια συμπεράσματα θα ήμασταν σε θέση να συναγάγουμε. Οι "Κρήτες" είναι ένα περίεργο και αρκετά ανατρεπτικό έργο. Τα αποσπάσματα είναι λιγοστά, ωστόσο πολύτιμα για δύο λόγους. Πρώτον, διότι δεν υπάρχει "έμμεση παράδοση" για το έργο, καθώς δεν μνημονεύεται από κανέναν ανθολόγο, λεξικογράφο ή μυθογράφο της ελληνιστικής εποχής, όπως συνήθως συμβαίνει. Και, δεύτερον, διότι τα αποσπάσματα που σήμερα σώζονται προέρχονται από αντιγραφείς του 2ου μ.Χ. αιώνα. Κατά συνέπεια, μια περίεργη σιωπή περιβάλλει τους "Κρήτες". Τα αποσπάσματα ΙΙ.0 και ΙΙΙ.0 αποτελούν κριτική σύνθεση για τις ανάγκες της παρούσας έκδοσης, ενώ στο κείμενο συμπεριλαμβάνονται και αποσπάσματα από τη στερεότυπη έκδοση του Nauck (1964).
